About

Mission

We shall educate competent candidates for key posts in government and business who can lead economic development towards environmental sustainability. Students will attend a state-of-the-art master’s program while engaging closely with business and government organizations through guest lectures, internships, and master’s thesis research. Students will also benefit from developing a strong alumni network spanning countries and continents.

History

The ASEAN Master in Sustainability Management is the result of over 30 years of partnership between Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) in Indonesia and the University of Agder (UiA) in Norway. In 2018-2019, both institutions recognized the need for a new approach to business and collaborated to design an interdisciplinary curriculum focused on environmental sustainability. This initiative aligns with the strategic goals of the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and aims to develop future sustainability leaders in the ASEAN region. The ASEAN University Network (AUN), which comprises leading universities across Southeast Asia, facilitated this collaboration to ensure the program is well-connected within the region. The program also offers full scholarships for highly qualified candidates from across ASEAN.

In 2020, a new program was approved by the ASEAN Secretariat and was scheduled to launch. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the launch was postponed to 2021. The program began its first batch in 2021, consisting of 23 students from ASEAN countries. The second batch started in 2023, with 17 students from ASEAN countries and 7 from Europe, bringing the total to 24 students.
